Surge arresters serve as the cornerstone for insulating a wide array of electrical equipment, including transformers, reactors, capacitors, generators, motors, PTs, CTs, circuit breakers, contactors, and all other medium and high voltage electrical apparatus within power systems. The effectiveness of surge arresters is crucial in determining the insulation standards-such as short-time power frequency withstand voltage, lightning impulse withstand voltage, and operating impulse withstand voltage-of all electrical equipment within the power system. Among conventional surge arresters, Metal Oxide Surge Arresters (MOA) stand out as the most advanced products. Constructed from multi-metal oxide powder, mainly zinc oxide, the core component is sintered to deliver superior nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics, rapid response to steep waves, and substantial current carrying capacity.
2. PURPOSE AND USAGE
MOA products are indispensable in AC power generation, transmission, transformation, and distribution systems operating at voltages up to 220kV. They effectively limit the peak amplitude of both lightning-induced and internally generated overvoltages to specified levels, ensuring optimal insulation coordination across the entire system. Note that this product is not designed to mitigate resonance overvoltages, for which alternative detuning methods must be employed. MOA products are engineered to safeguard the insulation of AC power transmission and transformation equipment from damage caused by lightning overvoltage and operational overvoltage. They are suitable for protection applications in transformers, transmission lines, distribution panels, switchgear, power measurement boxes, vacuum switches, shunt compensation capacitors, rotating machines, and semiconductor devices, among others.

Maintenance-free environment: suitable for moderate pollution levels or lower;
Gapless MOA products should operate continuously at a power frequency voltage that does not exceed MOA's continuous operating voltage;
For products with gaps, installation should be at a point where the power frequency voltage does not exceed MOA's rated voltage.
4. INSTALLATION METHOD
Before proceeding with installation, ensure that the MOA product model aligns with its intended application and thoroughly clean the product's surface. MOAs with a rated voltage below 25kV should be vertically mounted on the outer casing or a dedicated bracket of the protected equipment. Utilize multi-strand flexible wire with a cross-sectional area of at least 10mm² to connect the MOA terminal to the phase line (busbar) and ground wire (grounding resistance should not exceed 10Ω). For MOAs with rated voltages of up to 42kV, employ multi-strand flexible wire with a cross-sectional area of no less than 16mm² for connections. First, secure the base on the pedestal, then vertically install the surge arrester unit in sequence, following the wiring instructions. If installation of a counter is necessary, it should be connected in series with the low voltage side of the MOA. If a disconnector is required, connect it in series with the MOA. For line-type surge arresters, use the suspension type and ensure the surge arrester does not bear line tension. Other installation details should be mutually agreed upon by the supplier and the buyer.
